San Diego Firm Demos High-Power User Equipment for Public-Safety LTE

Assured Wireless, a start-up based in San Diego, announced a demonstration of its prototype high-power Wi-Fi-to-Long Term Evolution (LTE) portable hot spot device designed to serve the needs of public-safety organizations.

“We’re excited to demonstrate the many benefits that HPUE offers to public-safety broadband wireless networks with enhanced range, data rate and capacity in a portable device,” said Thomas Bilotta, CEO of Assured Wireless.

High power user equipment (HPUE) is able to connect at long range or deeply inside large concrete buildings, something that existing standard-power broadband devices can’t do, a statement said.

Initial field trials in 700 MHz band 14 networks in Texas and California show that operating range, uplink data rates and overall network capacity are considerably enhanced with the technology, a statement said. The demonstrations were conducted on the early builder networks in Harris and Brazos counties in Texas and the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Communications System (LA-RICS), said Bob LaRose, vice president of business development.

HPUE is a public-safety feature initialized in LTE Release 11 and finished in September 2013 for LTE band 14 in North America. The feature increases the transit power of LTE devices to 1.2 watts from 200 milliwatts, allowing the devices to extend coverage indoors and in rural areas. For comparison, almost all 700 MHz LMR portable radios have transmitters capable of 3 watts output.

Although the standard has been complete for several years, only a few vendors have developed HPUE products. Assured Wireless is offering demonstrations of the capabilities of its portable technology to public-safety organizations in the coverage areas of the band 14 LTE networks.
